One of the many things I love about yoga is how relatable it is to so many aspects of life. Recently for me, this has been getting comfortable with being UNcomfortable. Knowing how uncomfortable I can sometimes be in yoga (without pain of course) while exploring new postures in my body, I also have learned how everything is temporary. Sometimes it can seem like forever in the moment when you're holding warrior II, frog, or even in savasana. When I remind myself that each moment in yoga is temporary, it helps me stay in the pose longer and explore what it's like to push myself past my comfort zone.
The past few days coming to Australia has pushed me outside of my comfort zone BIG TIME. I almost didn't even realize how comfortable I was in my life in Vancouver. I had everything and more that I could possibly need. A cozy place to call home, a reliable and fun car, friends and family close by and familiar surroundings wherever I went. I think sometimes we forget how easy it is to stay inside our comfort zone. It's so easy to get into a routine and when we leave it, it kind of flips us upside down and forces us to re-evaluate.
Today at the grocery store I had a realization. What a luxury it is to know which store to go to for your favourite food, you know where everything is, you are familiar with all the brands. I remember having this feeling about grocery shopping when I lived in Vienna, Austria. Something that you can usually do without much thought, requires a lot more attention. I know eventually it will become more familiar and I will know what I'm looking for when I walk in, but right now it's pushing me outside of my comfort zone.
We'll be traveling around for the next few weeks at least before we start to look for a place to live here in Australia. Just knowing that I can't fully unpack my suitcase and settle in is another thing that's pushed me outside of my comfort zone. The good news is, this is temporary. Because I know this, I can enjoy the moment more. Is it a hassle to haul all of our bags around from place to place? Hell yeah. Do I know it will be worth it? YES! Also, it will feel even better when we finally do find a place we want to set up camp for a while.
Get used to feeling uncomfortable because the reality is, sometimes in life we need to be uncomfortable. Those moments will be much more enjoyable for you if you know that they are temporary and they are almost always worth it.
